Philip

Philip
Philip m
English: from the Greek name Philippos, composed of the elements philein to love + hippos horse, which was popular in the classical period and after. It was the name of the father of Alexander the Great. It was also the name of one of Christ's apostles, of a deacon ordained by the apostles after the death of Christ, and of several other early saints. The spelling Phillip is sometimes used, although not etymologically justified; it is in part a result of the influence of the English surname Phillips, which is generally spelt with -ll-.
Cognates: Irish Gaelic: Pilib. Scottish Gaelic: Filib. French: Philippe. Italian: Filippo. Spanish: Felipe. Catalan: Felip. German: Philipp. Polish, Czech, Scandinavian: Filip. Hungarian: Fülöp. Finnish: Vilppu.
Short forms: English: Phil, Pip.
Feminine form: PHILIPPA (SEE Philippa).
